October News

October 9, 2009

  1. Shoreline Master Program Update – Residents received a recent mailing from the City of Renton for the Shoreline Master Program Update.  This may affect shoreline development including docks and piers, buffers and excavation. More details are on the following link: http://rentonwa.gov/business/default.aspx?id=15508.  Upcoming meetings will be held at 6:00 p.m. in the Council Chambers of Renton City Hall
  • Planning Commission Briefing: Wednesday, October 14, 2009 - No public comment will be taken at this time, but there will be a presentation to the Planning Commission on the revised draft SMP.
  • Public Hearing : Wednesday, October 21, 2009
  • Planning Commission Deliberations and Recommendation: Wednesday, November 18, 2009 (tentative)
  1. House Fire Update – Last week our neighbor who was rescued from the house fire had a fever, but they got it under control and are treating a small infection with meds. His daughter also mentioned that he is starting to recognize people, and will be taken off the tube hopefully today. If anyone should ask, this is the latest on Ron. His daughter has given me permission to relay this to the community.  Submitted by Nick Vacca, mnvacca@yahoo.com.
  2. Public Access Drug Activity – A fisherman has reported that there has been some drug activity going on at the public access at dusk.  A silver Mazda sports car and a silver Toyota come, park and other cars come and go around them.  He has seen them also smoke weed, but didn’t have a cell phone so never called.  A case number has been opened by a neighbor for reporting suspected drug activity at the King County Sheriff's Office.  You can report suspected drug activity by calling the communications center at 206-296-3311 or 911 and reference case number 09-236-693.  If people will report when they see this kind of activity, we may get more frequent police patrols.
  3. Annual Roadside Clean Up- Thanks to Heather Stafford for coordinating this year’s Roadside Cleanup.  Thanks to all the parents/kids at the afternoon bus stop who helped clean the boat launch area and neighboring roads.  (We weren’t able to get Woodside Road unfortunately, but most other areas were covered.) Feel free to pick up a free King County Trash Bag at the Stafford’s house (17736 E Lake Desire) and leave full bags at the Lake Desire Clubhouse.  Neighbors will still have all weekend, Oct 10th or 11th to pick up along the roads.  The bags will be picked up by King County on Monday or Tuesday, October 12th or 13th.  Thanks for participating in beautifying our roads!  Questions email Heather Stafford, heather.stafford@comcast.net or call 206-498-1308.
  4. Wednesday Night Walks – Dorothy Paun is still leading walks on Wednesday evenings for women starting at the end of the W Lk Desire past the clubhouse.  Walks will start at 6 pm now.  Contact Dorothy if interested, to.e@comcast.net.
  5. Lake Desire Trimming – Last week our neighbor drove around the lake and surveyed our "road issues".  South end is very good.  West side not bad.  North end/swamp badly overgrown over road.  East side worse. No "sight distance" endangers children walking to/from school, vehicles, bicyclists, etc.  She phoned Manny at KC Roads and he said they would get to it as soon as they could free up a machine. Wednesday she drove around and was happy to see that they had cut the north/swamp end but no cutting past there.
Another call to Manny.  He said their machine broke after doing the swamp but they will be back to do east side in the very near future.  She also asked him to do an inspection of the large drainage pipes at the north end to be sure they are not plugged (which would cause waters to go over pavement.) as well as the other "under-the-road" culverts around our neighborhood.  He promised to do it and I trust his word. Anyone noticing problems can contact me and I will work on it. Submitted by Kathy Shertz, katshertz@q.com.
  6. Lake Desire Emergency Team - Your LAKE DESIRE EMERGENCY TEAM (LDET) member, Phyllis Miller, pamiller1234@aim.com will be contacting neighbors at the south end of the lake seeking volunteers to act as "neighbor-to-neighbor" contact persons in the event of an emergency situation in our neighborhood.  Heather Smith, heather@smith.net, (425-917-9533) is contacting neighbors on the North and East end of the Lake. Government agencies are encouraging the LDET to implement a system as quickly as possible. Thanks to those who have responded already. Submitted by Kathy Shertz, katshertz@q.com.
  7. Emergency Preparedness Tips Government agencies are constantly reminding us that we should be prepared for any emergencies.  Current threats are:  H1N1 Virus, potential for flooding in the Green River Valley to/and including Renton/Tukwila, and winter wind, rain, snow and ice storms.  Puget Sound Energy included a "be prepared" column in their newsletter in our recent billing:  Check doors and windows for leaks and drafts.  Examine heating ducts for leaks.  Add insulation to your attic. Close the fireplace damper when not in use.  Have your furnace inspected.  Clean or replace the furnace air filters at least every two months. Your local fire district recommends checking your smoke detector(s) when you change to/from Daylight Saving Time twice a year.  If necessary replace the battery.  Never disable the unit by removing the battery for even a short period of time. Soos Creek Water and Sewer included emergency preparedness information in their newsletter with your recent water bill.  They encourage everyone to prepare now for the winter season and recommend that you take advantage of resources available to help you prepare for emergencies.  Visit "3 Days 3 Ways" at www.3days3ways.org and "Take Winter By Storm" at www.takewinterbystorm.org. You can access information on the www.kingcounty.gov website (middle of page) relative to the Green River situation, H1N1 info, RPIN alerts, Be prepared info, road alerts and phone numbers.  All pet owners should have emergency rations, meds, transport device, etc. on hand.  Owners should also be prepared to transport their pets in case of emergency evacuation.  Will they, and their supplies, fit in your vehicle??? In the event the Green River Valley floods the impact will be far reaching.  A great number of items that we use everyday are distributed from the Valley.  FedEx, DHL, UPS, Safeway, all come out of the Valley.  People displaced by flooding will need to find housing, food, supplies, gas for their vehicles, banking, health care, etc. in our neighborhoods. Keep your vehicle fuel tank at least 3/4 full at all times.  Past events have created fuel shortages. Submitted by Kathy Shertz, katshertz@q.com.
